RED FOX - VULPES VULPES

Foxes are re-nound for their hunting skills as many books have clearly them in a stereotype of the ‘cunning fox’. Foxes eat small mammals, birds, insects, berries and earthworms. At night they forage over a large area (around 52km 2 ) and if their natural food source isn’t abundant they will regularly take tops of bins and raid bird tables in search of food

The Red Fox is found in all types of habitat from the high mountains to the urban environment. The presence of foxes is most felt around the winter months of January and February due to the distinctive sound of the mating call from the dog fox. Generally this time of year is best to view foxes as they are out earlier in the evening whereas for the rest of the year they are mainly nocturnal. Nonetheless in the summer months when the daylight hours are longer it is possible to view them going back to their den. Dens are not the only place where foxes are willing to stay though as they have been known to sleep in a dense thicket or even up a tree.

Foxes are approximately 60-90cm in length and although many people perceive them as large mammals they are only around 35-50cm tall. Their head is long and pointed; they have a bushy tail and large triangular ears. The colour of the fur varies from yellowish-red to black. Foxes are re-nound for their hunting skills as many books have clearly them in a stereotype of the ‘cunning fox’. Foxes eat small mammals, birds, insects, berries and earthworms. At night they forage over a large area (around 52km 2) and if their natural food source isn’t abundant they will regularly take tops of bins and raid bird tables in search of food. A foxes only predator is man, estimates vary but the latest figure shows that around 50,000 foxes are killed by man each year either through hunting and shooting or via road kills. Even so, there seems to be very little effect on the population size.
